ChatGPT Ads Shopify App: The Seven-Step Setup and OpenAI's September 23 International Date

OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify connects an ad account and a pixel to your store and syncs your catalog into a product feed. Here is the setup in OpenAI's own order, what the catalog sync hands over, what OpenAI said about opening the app internationally from September 23, and what the first 11 reviews report.

The US got the app. Other ChatGPT Ads markets got a date.

A merchant with a few hundred products on Shopify opens the ChatGPT Ads listing on the morning of September 23. Today is the date OpenAI gave. The page lists the developer as OpenAI, one language, English, and 2.9 stars from 11 reviews. It names no markets.

OpenAI's own setup article, captured the same morning, still describes the integration as available to all Shopify customers in the US and coming to other ChatGPT Ads markets "shortly". That is not evidence the date slipped, since help pages often trail a rollout. It is a reason to trust your own store's install screen over a headline, this one included.

The app itself is concrete. Built by OpenAI and hosted in the Shopify App Store, it connects a ChatGPT ad account to your store, connects a pixel, syncs your catalog into a ChatGPT Ads product feed and builds product ads from it. This guide walks the setup in the order OpenAI's help article gives it, explains what the catalog sync hands over, and reads the first 11 reviews for what they do and do not show. If you are new to the channel itself, what advertising inside ChatGPT is covers the basics first.

What OpenAI put in the Shopify App Store

The listing is short, and most of what a merchant needs to know about the app's scope is on it.

An OpenAI app, not a third-party connector

The developer line reads OpenAI, with a San Francisco address, and the support line reads "App support provided by OpenAI." That matters because the App Store carried apps with ChatGPT Ads in their names before this one: at least one third-party product-feed app from another developer dates its launch to July 9, 2026. Check the developer line before you install.

The listing describes five things the app does:

  • Connect or create an ad account directly from Shopify
  • Sync the product catalog to ChatGPT Ads Manager automatically
  • Create ads from the catalog "in just a few clicks"
  • Run campaigns using a Shopify pixel and conversion events
  • Track performance and manage campaigns without leaving Shopify

It lists English as its only language and says it works with Checkout and Shopify Admin.

Released September 3, announced September 16

The listing dates the app's launch to September 3, 2026. OpenAI announced it thirteen days later, in a September 16 post that named Shopify "our first ecommerce partner" and said: "Also available today, US-based Shopify merchants can use the new ChatGPT Ads app." Two US merchants had reviewed it by September 11, five days before the announcement.

The same post introduced Sponsored Agents and new AI creative tools in Ads Manager, which we cover in our piece on Sponsored Agents. This one stays on the Shopify app.

The price field covers the app, not the ads

As read on September 23, 2026, the listing's pricing field reads Free. That describes the install. The campaigns you run from the app spend the budgets you set in them, and how those budgets are entered inside Shopify has one quirk, covered in the campaign section below.

What the app can read and change in your store

The listing's data-access section is specific. According to it, the app can:

  • View customer data: name and email address, plus IP address, browser and operating system, browsing behavior and a client ID cookie
  • View store owner data: name, email address, phone number and physical address
  • View store data: customers' browsing behavior, and product listings, products and collections
  • Edit marketing and analytics: marketing events, web pixels and server pixels

Read that list against your own store's privacy policy before you click install. Most of it is what conversion measurement needs. The product lines are the catalog.

The seven-step connection, in order

OpenAI's Help Center article gives the connection as seven steps, after a short checklist worth clearing first.

Before step one: five things to have ready

  • An active Shopify store
  • An active ChatGPT Ads Manager account, or the information required to create one
  • Permission to install and manage apps in Shopify
  • Permission to manage your Ads Manager account
  • A website, industry, country, currency and time zone for the advertising account

The last line carries the most weight, because if you create the account from Shopify those details become the account. Two gates sit behind it:

  • Industry. One of the listing's one-star reviews, dated September 16, reports the account being turned away with a message that ads are not currently served for that merchant's industry, and no appeal email arriving.
  • Brand review. An account has to clear OpenAI's brand review before it serves, which we walked through in how to run ChatGPT Ads.

The seven steps then group into three jobs: the account, the pixel and the catalog.

Steps 1 to 3: the account

  1. In Shopify, install or open the ChatGPT Ads app.
  2. Select Connect Account.
  3. Choose an existing Ads Manager account, or create one by confirming your organization, account name, website, industry, country, currency and time zone.

If you already run ChatGPT Ads, connect the existing account rather than opening a second one. Your brand review, pixel history and past campaigns then stay in one place.

Steps 4 and 5: the pixel

  1. Select or create the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify.
  2. Connect the Pixel "to allow eligible Shopify commerce events to flow to Ads Manager."

A merchant asked on the listing whether the app uses server-to-server tracking. OpenAI replied on September 12: "The app does automatically set up a Shopify server pixel, which is what we often describe as a server to server CAPI integration." That lines up with the data-access section, which covers both web pixels and server pixels.

Three pixel questions are worth settling before launch:

  • Matching. OpenAI's web pixel has a matching feature that, when enabled, detects customer information on your website, explained in the automatic advanced matching switch.
  • Optimization. The events this pixel sends are what a conversions goal optimizes toward, covered in how ChatGPT Ads conversion bidding works.
  • Duplicates. If you installed a third-party ChatGPT pixel app earlier in the summer, check whether both are reporting the same purchases before you trust a conversion count.

Steps 6 and 7: the catalog

  1. Wait for your product inventory to sync into your ChatGPT Ads product feed. The article warns that "Sync time varies based on catalog size and system conditions."
  2. In Ads Manager, use the synced product feed to create product ads.

The article names three things the connection syncs:

  • Product inventory and catalog information for product ads
  • Store updates that help keep product information current
  • Commerce events, through the connected OpenAI Pixel for Shopify

Step 7 points to Ads Manager, but the same article also describes building a campaign inside Shopify. Both routes exist, and the section after next covers the Shopify one.

What the catalog sync hands to ChatGPT

The sync is the part of the app that saves the most work, and the part that decides what your ads look like.

The feed you no longer build by hand

OpenAI's developer documentation describes the product-feed route for advertisers without the app. You create a feed, configure SFTP access, and upload a UTF-8 CSV with one row per product or variant, carrying fields such as image_url, price, availability and is_ads_eligible. Then you check upload history and fix the rejected rows.

That documentation does not mention Shopify. The help article does say the Shopify sync lands in "your ChatGPT Ads product feed", and the listing calls the sync automatic. Our reading is that the app stands in for that whole upload pipeline and keeps running after setup, which is the real saving for a store with hundreds of variants.

In a catalog ad, your product photo is the creative

OpenAI's documentation for product-feed campaigns says the product-ad template "uses product text, prices, images, and destination URLs from the feed." It is blunter a few lines later: "The selected product supplies the image and destination URL." Each product-feed ad group can hold at most one non-archived product-ad template.

Put those together and the picture a shopper sees in a catalog ad is the photo already on your product page. A catalog of flat, cluttered or inconsistent product shots goes into ChatGPT exactly as it is. That makes the product photo worth more attention than any campaign setting. It is also the same asset the rest of your paid mix runs on, whether you shoot it yourself or turn one clean shot into several ad-ready versions with Novoads.

Syncing is not serving

OpenAI's product-feed documentation is careful on this point: "A completed upload does not establish that every product can serve. Product data, availability, reviews, product filters, and campaign eligibility still apply." The same page adds three rules a merchant feels quickly:

  • Stock. An out-of-stock product stops qualifying for delivery once the change propagates.
  • Selection. Ad groups can filter the feed by brand, category, price or item ID.
  • Geography. New product-feed campaigns support geographic targeting and exclusions only at country level.

OpenAI documents these rules for product-feed campaigns in general rather than for the Shopify app. The help article routes the app's product ads through that feed, so plan as if they apply.

Building a campaign without leaving Shopify

The help article lists the campaign form as seven short steps, from opening the app to launch; here they fold into five.

The campaign form, field by field

  1. Open the ChatGPT Ads app in Shopify and click Create Campaign.
  2. Enter a campaign name, budget, optimization event and targeting.
  3. Select the ad type: all products, single product or website.
  4. Select the products to include.
  5. Review the ad preview, then select Create and Launch campaign.

The ad type is the real decision:

  • Use single product for a first test on a hero SKU, because every result belongs to one product page.
  • Use all products for a range of similar items, accepting that results are harder to pin to one page.

Where Shopify stops and Ads Manager takes over

The article is candid that the Shopify form is the lighter surface. It splits the work like this:

  • Budgets. In Ads Manager "advertisers can set budgets at $28 versus fixed increments of $25", so inside Shopify budgets move in steps of $25.
  • Overall results. The Analytics tab in Shopify.
  • Detailed results. ChatGPT Ads Manager, whose reporting we cover in how to run ChatGPT Ads.

Disconnecting is not a pause button

The article spells out what disconnecting does. It "stops future product updates from your store" and does not delete your Ads Manager account or campaigns. Campaigns that depend on the Shopify product feed "may pause or stop updating." If you want to stop spending, pause the campaigns first and disconnect second.

The first 11 reviews, read as a snapshot

A rating on an app this young moves by the day. These figures are the listing as read on September 23, 2026, and they describe 11 merchants, not the platform.

A split rating with no middle

The listing showed 2.9 stars from 11 reviews. Seven were one-star, 64% of ratings, and four were five-star, 36%. Nothing sat between.

What the one-star reviews describe

Four of the seven one-star reviews describe the connection failing, at install or on connect. The shortest, dated September 17, reads in full: "Won't connect - gives error." One, dated September 21 from a merchant five days in, describes the sync: "Products not syncing, manual sync keeps rejecting, support is clueless so far." One is the industry refusal mentioned above, and one says only that the app does not work.

The five-star side is thinner but specific. One reviewer on September 18 wrote "Much easier than Google Ads" after verification completed, and another reported that the store's events reached Ads Manager after connecting.

How long the reviewers had used it

The listing shows how long each reviewer had used the app when they wrote:

  • Under ten minutes: seven of the 11
  • Ten to thirty minutes: two more, at 13 and 26 minutes
  • Longer: two, at about 19 hours and five days

Our reading: the rating so far is mostly a verdict on the connection step, not on whether the ads sell.

OpenAI's own troubleshooting list

The help article's troubleshooting section maps closely onto the complaints. If products do not appear in Ads Manager, it says to:

  • Confirm the Shopify app is connected to the correct Ads Manager account
  • Confirm the product feed has finished syncing
  • Check that your Shopify products are active and available
  • Confirm the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify is connected
  • Refresh Ads Manager after the sync completes
  • Confirm you are using Chrome or Safari

If it still fails, the article directs you to [email protected] with the Ads Manager account you are trying to connect.

What September 23 does and does not settle

The international date is the news, and it is also the part with the least behind it.

What OpenAI said on September 16

OpenAI gave the international date a single sentence: "The app will be available internationally in markets where ChatGPT Ads are available starting September 23." eMarketer on September 17 and BetaKit on September 18 repeated the date, BetaKit explicitly "according to OpenAI". Both were reporting the same announcement, so that is one source repeated, not independent confirmation. BetaKit also asked OpenAI whether the rollout includes Canada and, as of its story, had no answer.

What OpenAI's pages said on the morning of the 23rd

Two OpenAI surfaces were readable that morning:

  • The Help Center article, captured at 09:15 UTC, read: "This integration is currently available to all Shopify customers in the US and will be available wherever ChatGPT ads are available shortly."
  • The App Store listing still showed English as its only language and no list of markets.

OpenAI has not published which markets the phrase covers. Until it does, "markets where ChatGPT Ads are available" is the whole scope, and no one outside OpenAI can tell you your country is in it.

How to check for your own store

Three checks answer the question for you, faster than any article can:

  • Open the listing while signed in to your store. The listing carries a compatibility notice for stores it does not support. Its list of conditions was not visible to our fetcher, so read it on your own install screen.
  • Re-read the help article's availability line. It is where OpenAI states, in its own words, who can use the integration today.
  • Confirm ChatGPT Ads itself runs where you sell. OpenAI ties the app to markets where ChatGPT Ads are available, and the rules differ by region, as the European launch showed.

Once you are in, which product categories carry the most ChatGPT ads is the next question worth answering before you set a budget.

How Novoads solves the product-photo problem catalog ads create

Novoads turns an uploaded product photo into ad-ready images and makes UGC-style video ads from a script and an AI actor, and it works beside a Shopify store rather than inside it. It is not a Shopify app, it does not touch your product feed, and nothing in this post depends on it.

It fits in two places. OpenAI's Help Center, as archived in early September, lists an image asset among the parts of every ChatGPT ad. In a catalog ad the product supplies that image, and in an ad you build outside the catalog you choose it, which is where a set of distinct treatments of one product earns its keep. The same product also needs video on the channels where video is the unit, the ones covered in ecommerce video ads, and Novoads exports vertical, square and horizontal files for any of them. Plans are on the pricing page.

The catalog is the campaign now

For a US Shopify merchant the app is the right door into ChatGPT Ads, and a rough first week of reviews is a reason to test small, not a reason to wait. eMarketer's advice points the same way: it forecasts that 34.9% of the US population will use ChatGPT in 2026 against 77.7% for search, and it tells advertisers to limit spending until more transformative updates, such as measurement tools, arrive. For a merchant in another market where ChatGPT Ads run, the date is a promise until your install screen says otherwise. Either way, the work that pays first is not in Ads Manager. On a catalog ad the product page is the ad, so the cheapest optimization you can make is the one you make in Shopify, to the photo, before the feed ever syncs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify do?

It is OpenAI's own app in the Shopify App Store. According to its listing, it lets a merchant connect an existing ChatGPT ad account or create a new one from Shopify, automatically sync the product catalog to ChatGPT Ads Manager, create ads from that catalog, run campaigns using a Shopify pixel and conversion events, and track performance without leaving Shopify. OpenAI's help article adds that the catalog lands in a ChatGPT Ads product feed that is used to create product ads.

Is the ChatGPT Ads Shopify app available outside the US?

OpenAI said on September 16, 2026 that the app would be available internationally in markets where ChatGPT Ads are available starting September 23. On the morning of September 23, OpenAI's Help Center article still described the integration as available to all Shopify customers in the US and coming to other ChatGPT Ads markets shortly. OpenAI has not published a list of markets, so the reliable test is to open the listing while signed in to your own store and see whether it installs.

How do I set up ChatGPT Ads on Shopify?

OpenAI's help article gives seven steps. Install or open the ChatGPT Ads app in Shopify, select Connect Account, then choose an existing Ads Manager account or create one by confirming your organization, account name, website, industry, country, currency and time zone. Select or create the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify and connect it. Wait for your inventory to sync into your ChatGPT Ads product feed, then use that feed to create product ads.

Does the ChatGPT Ads Shopify app install a pixel?

Yes. The help article's fourth step is to select or create the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify, and the fifth is to connect it so eligible Shopify commerce events flow to Ads Manager. Replying to a review on September 12, OpenAI wrote that the app automatically sets up a Shopify server pixel, which it describes as a server-to-server Conversions API integration. The listing's data-access section says the app can edit web pixels and server pixels.

How much does the ChatGPT Ads Shopify app cost?

As read on September 23, 2026, the listing's pricing field reads Free, which covers installing the app. Your campaigns still spend the budgets you set in them. OpenAI's help article notes that budgets set inside Shopify move in fixed increments of $25, while Ads Manager accepts other amounts, giving $28 as its example.

Why does the ChatGPT Ads Shopify app have such low reviews?

As read on September 23, 2026 the listing showed 2.9 stars from 11 reviews: seven at one star, four at five, none in between. Four of the one-star reviews describe the connection failing at install or on connect, one describes products not syncing, one an industry refusal, and one gives no detail. Nine of the 11 reviewers had used the app for under half an hour, so the rating mostly measures the connection step. OpenAI's help article carries a troubleshooting list for exactly those failures.

Key Takeaways

  • The ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store is built by OpenAI. It connects an existing ChatGPT ad account or creates one, connects an OpenAI Pixel for Shopify, syncs the catalog into a ChatGPT Ads product feed, and builds product ads from it.
  • The listing dates the app's launch to September 3, 2026. September 16 is the day OpenAI announced it for US merchants, and OpenAI said it would be available internationally in markets where ChatGPT Ads are available starting September 23.
  • OpenAI's own setup article, captured on the morning of September 23, still said the integration is available to all Shopify customers in the US and will reach other ChatGPT Ads markets shortly. OpenAI has published no list of markets, so check the install screen for your own store.
  • In a catalog ad the product supplies the picture. OpenAI's product-feed documentation says the selected product supplies the image and destination URL, which makes the photos already on your product pages the creative ChatGPT shows.
  • As read on September 23 the listing showed 2.9 stars from 11 reviews, seven at one star and four at five, and nine of the 11 reviewers had used the app for under half an hour. Read it as a verdict on the connection step, not on whether the ads sell.
