Runway AI Review for Ads: Where 625 Credits Go, What Users Say

A Runway AI review for ad makers. What Standard's 625 credits buy in clips and dollars, ratings with counts and dates, and where Novoads costs less or more.

$15 on Runway buys 52 seconds of Gen-4.5

If you're reading a Runway AI review because you need ads, start with what the entry-level paid plan buys. Standard costs $15 billed monthly and comes with 625 credits. Runway's pricing page works that out to 52 seconds of Gen-4.5. Spend those credits on Seedance 2.5 at 720p instead and you get four 5-second clips. We think that's enough to learn the tool, but thin for a month of ad tests.

Three of the top five results in our November 4 search were articles. None of them gives a per-second rate or a store rating with its count, and none names Gen-4.5. So we priced one clip on every plan, collected the ratings with their counts, and worked out where Novoads costs less and where it costs more. We read Runway's own pages and its public ratings that day. Its help center wouldn't open for us, so anything we cite from it comes from a dated archive copy. The Novoads side comes from a clip of ours. We didn't test Runway for this post.

What's on Runway today if you make ads

The video models and the dates Runway gives them

Runway's AI video page says you can "Generate videos with Runway's proprietary models and leading third-party models from Google, OpenAI, ByteDance and more." For ads, you'll probably look at these seven first. The rates are credits a second from Runway's academy page, read November 4, 2026, and the makers come from its API model list.

Aleph 2.0 (Runway)Editing clips up to 30 seconds at 1080p28May 21, 2026, changelog

A date on the API list is the API's date. It doesn't tell you when a model reached the app. You can see the gap with Gen-4.5, whose research post is dated December 1, 2025, while its API listing shows February 10, 2026. We've written separate posts on Seedance 2.5, Wan 3.0, Kling 3.0 against Seedance 2.5 and Runway against Veo.

Standard's card doesn't name Seedance 2.5 among its models the way the Pro and Max cards do. But it does say "Access to all AI video & image models," and Runway's Seedance page says the model is "available on all paid plans," so we've priced it on Standard below.

Runway Ads and the pages aimed at ad makers

Runway's changelog entry for October 27, 2026, says "Runway Ads finds your next winning ad for you. It reads your best performers on Meta, Google and TikTok, generates on-brand variants for every placement and publishes the ones you approve." It adds "Included with every paid plan," and the Standard, Pro and Max cards all list it. We didn't test it, so we can't tell you how well it picks winners.

Runway's UGC ads page says you don't need to hire a creator and that you can "Describe the person you want on camera and Runway generates them, or go faceless with hands-only and POV shots." Its Seedance 2.5 page promises "a finished ad without a shoot to book" and says "Up to 30 seconds gives you room for a full spot." Read that last line next to the rate. At 720p, 30 seconds is 900 credits. Standard gives you 625 a month.

What Runway says about Gen-4.5's strengths and limits

Runway's research post on the model, dated December 1, 2025, says it "ranked #1 on the Artificial Analysis Text-to-Video benchmark with 1,247 Elo points." That's Runway's own report from release day, and we didn't check today's rankings. The same post lists known limits, including "Object permanence: objects may disappear or appear unexpectedly across frames (e.g., a cup vanishing after being occluded)." If your ad needs a product to stay in the shot, we'd test that before anything else.

Outages on models from other companies

Runway's status page read "All Systems Operational" on November 4, but it also listed two resolved incidents from the days before. Most Kling video generations failed or ran slowly for about ten hours starting on November 2, and the page blamed "an issue with our upstream provider." During that outage, Runway's note said "we recommend using a different video model." A Seedance incident lasted about five hours, overnight into November 4, with no cause given. We'd keep a second model in mind if a launch date depends on one of these, and that goes for any app selling them, ours included.

Where Standard's 625 credits go

Prices in this section are list prices in US dollars, as of November 4, 2026, read from Spain.

Standard, Pro and Max side by side

Runway's pricing page opens on yearly billing, and the monthly side shows the higher price. You get the same credits a month either way.

The pricing FAQ says Gen-4.5 "uses 12 credits per second of generated video," and the comparison table on the same page shows "60 credits/5s," so the two agree. Treat that as a base rate. An October 25 copy of Runway's help article says ProRes or PNG sequence output adds 5 credits a second on Max, Unlimited (Legacy) and Enterprise. Standard's card doesn't list those formats, so they don't change its math.

One 5-second clip on every plan

We priced two clips, each 5 seconds long with no video as input. Gen-4.5 takes 60 credits at 12 a second. Seedance 2.5 at 720p takes 150 credits. That's 30 a second on both the academy page and the API docs. For each plan, we divided the price by the credits to get a cost per credit, then multiplied by the clip's credits and rounded to the cent.

Plan and billingCost per creditGen-4.5, 60 creditsSeedance 2.5 at 720p, 150 credits
Standard, monthly$0.024$1.44$3.60
Standard, annual$0.0192$1.15$2.88
Pro, monthly$0.01556$0.93$2.33
Pro, annual$0.01244$0.75$1.87
Max, monthly$0.01$0.60$1.50
Max, annual$0.008$0.48$1.20
API$0.01$0.60$1.50

These figures assume you spend every credit and keep every take. Runway's FAQ says each model uses "a set number of credits per generation," so a take you throw away costs the same as one you keep. In whole clips, a month of credits doesn't go far on Standard.

PlanCredits a month5-second Gen-4.5 clips5-second Seedance 2.5 clips at 720p
Standard625104
Pro2,2503715
Max9,50015863

At 1080p, Seedance 2.5 rises to 68 credits a second. So 5 seconds costs 340 credits, and a month of Standard covers one clip.

Buying more credits

The FAQ says you can buy more from the Plans & Billing page, that "The minimum purchase is 1,000 credits," and that "Any additional credits you purchase never expire." The Pro card lists "Top-up credits anytime" and Standard's doesn't, though an October 15 copy of the help article names Standard among the plans that can buy. The website's own top-up price isn't on any public page we read.

The US App Store listing shows 1,000 generation credits at $10.00 inside the iPhone app. That's $0.01 a credit. At that price, the Seedance clip costs $1.50 on top of your subscription.

Promotions we saw on November 4

Three offers on Runway's pages were promotions when we read them, so we wouldn't plan a budget around them.

  • Kling 4.0 at 1080p is marked down from 118 to 89 credits per 5 seconds in the app, beside the line "25% off Kling 4.0 generations until November 30."
  • On the API, Kling 4.0 is "20% off through November 30, 2026 UTC," and the docs say "List prices apply from December 1, 2026 UTC."
  • For larger companies, a banner says "Enterprises get up to 2 months of usage free. Sign by 12/31."

App credits and API credits don't mix

An October 15 copy of the help article says "Runway credits will never appear in your API credits, and vice versa." API credits cost $0.01 each in the developer portal, and the docs add that "Sales tax may apply depending on your location." The rates aren't always the same either. Seedance 2.0 at 720p is 36 a second on the academy page and 30 in the API docs, so check the rate on the one you'll actually use.

What happens to credits you don't use

On Standard and Pro, the FAQ says "monthly credits don't roll over" and "they reset within 24 hours of your billing date each cycle." On Max, it says "up to one month of unused credits rolls over to the following month." So if you test ads in bursts, a quiet month on Standard or Pro costs you that month's credits.

Is Runway unlimited?

What today's pricing page shows

Not for generating video, going by the pricing page on November 4, 2026. It lists Free, Standard, Pro and Max for individuals, and each comes with a set number of credits. The word "Unlimited" does appear on the Pro and Max cards, in "Unlimited 4K video upscaling" and beside Topaz AI Upscale, but both of those are about upscaling.

One Trustpilot reviewer, in late October 2026, titled a complaint "Pro “unlimited” Topaz / 4K upscale still billed −30 credits." That's one person's account, and we couldn't check it.

What older pages still say

An archive copy of Runway's help article on the Unlimited plan, dated February 15, 2026, describes "infinite generative videos and images using Runway models at a relaxed rate in Explore Mode." It says "Explore Mode is a generation mode that doesn't use credits" and that "Any third party generations will use credits."

Two newer copies still mention it. The October 25 copy of the Gen-4.5 article lists "Infinite generations in Explore Mode" and names "Unlimited (Legacy)," and an October 15 copy of the credits article lists Unlimited next to Standard and Pro. We couldn't find a page that says what happens to people already on Unlimited, or when new sign-ups stopped.

If another review told you Runway has an Unlimited plan from about $95 a month (pexo.ai's did, last updated September 10, 2026), that's Max's monthly price on today's page. Max comes with 9,500 credits.

What Runway's users say, with counts

We read all of these on November 4, 2026. Counts move daily, so treat them as that day's numbers.

The App Store and Google Play

ListingScoreCount
App Store, US4.5 out of 519K ratings
App Store, UK4.3 out of 52k ratings
App Store, Spain4.4 out of 5886 ratings
Google Play, US4.411.4K reviews
Google Play, Spain4.011.4K reviews
Google Play, UK3.711.4K reviews

Google Play shows a different score by country on the same review count, so a store score doesn't mean much without its country. These listings rate the phone app, which is worth remembering if your team will work on the web.

Trustpilot's three profiles

Trustpilot has three separate profiles for Runway, all unclaimed. We've kept them apart because we can't tell how much they overlap.

Trustpilot profileScoreReviewsOne-star share
runwayml.com1.138593%

We couldn't open Runway's G2 or Capterra pages that day, so we can't give you those scores.

What the complaints are about

Seven of the eight reviews shown on the US App Store and Google Play listings that day complain about credits. That's a tiny sample, chosen by the stores, and each review below, Trustpilot's included, is one person's account that we didn't verify.

  • On Google Play, a reviewer wrote on August 27, 2026, "You pay for a subscription, then have to buy additional credits to generate videos." The page says 82 people found it helpful.
  • Another Google Play reviewer signed up for Standard and wrote on September 1, 2026, "I got one 15 second video trailer out of it then I was told to buy more credits." The same review ends, "if you're looking for a cheap way to create ads for your product this is not it."
  • On the US App Store, a review dated August 27 with no year says "You pay per generation not just for the ones you actually use."
  • On Trustpilot's runway.ml profile, in a review updated May 15, 2026, a reviewer wrote "I had the Pro Plan, and after just two 30-second videos, all my credits were gone."
  • On the runwayml.com profile, a reviewer in late October 2026 wrote "You ask one of the tools to do something 10 times, but it doesn't do it while chipping away at your credit."
  • On the runway.ml profile, a reviewer wrote on October 30, 2026, "I paid for a Runway subscription and had around 600 credits left when I cancelled because I hadn't used the service." Runway's FAQ says Standard and Pro credits reset each cycle, and we can't tell which credits those were.
  • On the runwayml.com profile, in early November 2026, a reviewer wrote "Horrible experience. They make it impossible to cancel." The pricing FAQ covers upgrades and downgrades, but we couldn't read Runway's help pages on canceling.

Even the praise comes with a condition. The App Store review above says "when it works, it's awesome, amazing technology," and a Google Play reviewer wrote on August 28, 2026, "The technology is impressive when it works."

How we read the gap between the scores

Unhappy reviewers aren't most users. We think people usually go looking for a Trustpilot page after something's gone wrong, and a store average also counts everyone who tapped a rating and moved on. So we wouldn't take 1.1 or 4.5 as the truth about Runway. We'd use the complaints as a checklist before paying (what a failed take costs you, how many takes your ad needs, and what happens to the credits you don't spend).

Watermarks and running Runway clips as ads

Watermarks by plan

On the pricing page, the Standard card lists "No watermarks," and the Pro and Max cards don't repeat that line. An archive copy of the Free plan help page from November 1, 2026, says "All videos generated on a Free plan feature a Runway watermark. You can generate without a watermark by signing up for the Standard plan or above." Runway's AI video page says "Images made on the Free plan carry a small Runway watermark." It adds, "Outputs from Runway's own models also carry C2PA content credentials on every plan."

Runway's Free plan itself is a one-time allotment of 125 credits, and the November 1 copy says it "does not renew or refresh once spent." The Seedance 2.5 page says that model is on paid plans, and the October 25 help copy gives Gen-4.5's plan requirement as "Standard and higher," so we wouldn't count on that plan to try either clip we priced above.

Commercial use and paid media

Runway's terms of use, last updated October 23, 2026, say "The Company does not claim ownership of any of your Inputs or Outputs." They continue, "Subject to your compliance with the Agreement, the Company does not restrict your commercial use of your Outputs." Runway's UGC ads page answers the ad maker's question with "You can run videos you create with Runway as paid media on TikTok, Meta, YouTube and anywhere else you advertise, under Runway's Terms of Use. Check each platform's AI label rules first." Its product video page says "You own full commercial rights to everything you create."

We'd read those lines together. Runway's terms apply, and checking each platform's label rules is on you.

Where Novoads fits if you're making ads

Novoads is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. You write a script or upload a product image, pick from 100+ AI actors, and get a video file for whichever ad platform you use. You pay from the first month.

Starter is $15 a month for 200 credits, and it's monthly only. Plus is $49 a month for 1,000 credits. Billed annually, it's $39 a month.

Three cards on our pricing page with monthly billing picked, giving the price and credits for Starter, Plus and Ultra

The Novoads pricing page on 2026-11-04 with monthly billing picked, so the prices are before any yearly discount

The same Seedance 2.5 clip, where we cost less and where we cost more

In Novoads, a 5-second Seedance 2.5 clip at 720p is 35 credits. At $0.075 a credit on Starter, that's $2.625. At $0.049 a credit on Plus, it's $1.715. The table puts those next to Runway's price for the same clip, as of November 4, 2026, from most to least expensive.

Where you buy the clipCreditsCost for one clip
Runway Standard, monthly150$3.60
Runway Standard, annual150$2.88
Novoads Starter, monthly35$2.625
Runway Pro, monthly150$2.33
Runway Pro, annual150$1.87
Novoads Plus, monthly35$1.715
Runway Max, monthly150$1.50
Runway API150$1.50
Novoads Plus, annual35$1.365
Runway Max, annual150$1.20

So Novoads costs less than Standard, monthly or annual, and Plus costs less than Pro either way too. Monthly Plus costs more than Max and the API, and Starter costs more than Pro. Compare annual with annual and Max is still cheaper than Plus. Max's lower price comes with a $95 monthly bill, and the API is a developer product with its own credits. Still, the lower price is real if you'll use those credits up. A top-up at the App Store's price also comes to $1.50.

Both entry plans cost $15. Starter's 200 credits buy 5 of these clips. Standard's 625 buy 4, so there's not much difference at that budget. We priced the same clip on Luma's plans if you're weighing that one too.

A clip of ours, at a different resolution

The strip below is a clip we made in Novoads, and it isn't a Runway clip. It's at 1080p, which is why it cost 60 credits. The table above is at 720p. At 1080p, that's $4.50 on Starter and $2.94 on Plus.

A woman in a floral blouse in a white kitchen, her smile widening across four frames as she holds up a small glass serum bottle with a gold collar

Made in Novoads with Seedance 2.5 · a single-line prompt for a serum bottle held up in a bright kitchen · vertical, 5 seconds at 1080p · 60 credits · finished in 8 minutes 38 seconds on 2026-09-21

On Runway, 5 seconds at 1080p is 340 credits. That's $8.16 at Standard's monthly price and $3.40 at Max's monthly price or on the API. So Plus comes in under Max's monthly price at that resolution, and Starter comes in over it. Annual against annual, that's $2.72 on Max and $2.34 on Plus.

We haven't compared Runway's Seedance 2.5 clips with ours side by side. It's the same model name in both apps, so we wouldn't promise you a better look from either one.

What Novoads adds for ads, and what it doesn't

Runway's UGC page has you describe the person you want. In Novoads, you pick from a library of AI actors and a talking actor reads your script. That costs 200 credits per minute or part of a minute at 720p, voice included. At 480p it's 100.

A stock actor's hands are empty, so to show your product in hand you upload a photo of someone holding it and create a custom actor. Product-to-Ad turns an uploaded product image into an ad image for 1 credit. Our pricing FAQ says "All videos generated with Novoads are fully licensed for commercial use."

There are things we don't do. Novoads doesn't sell Gen-4.5, Aleph 2.0 or any other Runway model, so if your ad needs one of those, you need Runway. Novoads makes the ad, and you run it yourself. If you want a product to read your best performers and publish what you approve, that's what Runway says Runway Ads does. Our Runway comparison page puts the two products side by side, and if neither fits, our list of Runway alternatives covers other tools.

Put Novoads next to Runway, then see what your next ad would cost in credits.

Compare Novoads and Runway

When we'd pay for Runway, and when we wouldn't

We'd treat Standard as a tryout whichever way you lean. Its 625 credits are enough to learn the tools, but they won't get you through a month of Seedance 2.5 ad tests at 720p, let alone 1080p.

We'd pay Runway if one of these sounds like you.

  • You want Gen-4.5 or Aleph 2.0 specifically, since we don't sell them.
  • You'll spend most of Max's 9,500 credits every month, because its Seedance 2.5 price at 720p beats ours.
  • You want Runway Ads to read your best performers and publish variants, and you're ready to test it yourself, since we haven't.

We'd start with Novoads if these sound more like you.

  • Your budget is closer to Starter or Plus, where the same 720p clip costs less than it does on Standard.
  • You need an actor reading a script more than you need a single cinematic shot.
  • You want a finished ad file, and you're happy to run it yourself wherever you buy media.

Before you subscribe to either, price your next ad in credits on the vendor's own page, and count the takes you expect to throw away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Runway AI actually good?

It depends who you ask, and we didn't test it for this review. On November 4, 2026, the US App Store showed 4.5 out of 5 from 19K ratings, while Trustpilot's runwayml.com profile showed 1.1 from 385 reviews. Some of the store reviewers we could see praise the output when it works, but most of them complain about credits spent on takes they couldn't use.

Is Runway AI unlimited?

Not for generating video, going by its pricing page on November 4, 2026. Free, Standard, Pro and Max each come with a set number of credits, and the word Unlimited appears only on upscaling lines on the Pro and Max cards. Older help pages describe an Unlimited plan with a credit-free Explore Mode, and an archive copy from October 25, 2026, calls it Unlimited (Legacy).

Is Runway AI the best video generator?

We can't tell you that, because we didn't test it. Runway's research post, dated December 1, 2025, says Gen-4.5 "ranked #1 on the Artificial Analysis Text-to-Video benchmark with 1,247 Elo points," and that's Runway's own report from release day. For ads, we'd judge it by what a usable clip costs. By our arithmetic, a 5-second Gen-4.5 clip is $1.44 at Standard's monthly price.

Who makes Runway AI?

Runway AI, Inc., the company named in its terms of use. The Google Play listing gives a New York address. The app also sells models from other companies, and the API model list names ByteDance, Alibaba, Google and Kling among them.

Can you run Runway videos as paid ads?

Runway's UGC ads page says you can, "under Runway's Terms of Use," and adds "Check each platform's AI label rules first." Its terms, last updated October 23, 2026, say the company doesn't restrict commercial use of your outputs, subject to your compliance with the agreement.

Key Takeaways

  • Runway's Standard plan is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed annually. Either way you get 625 credits a month, which its pricing page works out to 52 seconds of Gen-4.5.
  • A 5-second Seedance 2.5 clip at 720p takes 150 credits on Runway. By our arithmetic, that's $3.60 at Standard's monthly price and $1.50 at Max's monthly price or on the API.
  • The same clip is 35 credits in Novoads. That's $2.625 on Starter and $1.715 on Plus. Both come in under Standard and over Max and the API.
  • Runway's pricing page listed no plan called Unlimited on November 4, 2026. Older help pages describe one, and an October 25 archive copy calls it Unlimited (Legacy).
  • On November 4, 2026, the US App Store showed 4.5 out of 5 from 19K ratings. Trustpilot's runwayml.com profile showed 1.1 from 385 reviews the same day.
  • Seven of the eight reviews shown on the US App Store and Google Play listings that day complain about credits. We'd treat Standard as a tryout, because a month of its credits buys four Seedance 2.5 clips at 720p.
