Fashion Advertising: The Ad Formats That Sell Clothes, and Where TikTok's AI Try-On Fits
The catalog, carousel and collection ads that Meta, TikTok, Pinterest and Google offer clothing brands, what TikTok's AI try-on avatar can and can't model, and what our own stills and clips of one outfit cost.

The top results stop at famous campaigns
Search for fashion advertising and most of the first page is about famous campaigns. You'll find a YouTube playlist of films from luxury houses, histories of iconic ads, an agency's list of in-person campaigns and a set of example ads from online stores. None of the top results we could read on November 7, 2026, names a catalog, carousel or collection ad format, or any AI try-on tool.
Yet those formats are what Meta, TikTok, Pinterest and Google sell to a brand with a product catalog. And in July, TikTok said its AI avatars could put voiceover, product demos and virtual try-on into one workflow.
We read every platform's rules on its own pages that day, from Spain. We made the four stills and two clips below in Novoads for this post on the same day, and our prices come from our own price list. We didn't test Symphony, Google's Try-on or any platform's ad tools for this post.
The formats that sell clothes, platform by platform
We read each of these pages on November 7, 2026. Where a page gives a result, it's the platform's own figure for its own product.
Meta's catalog ads, carousels and collections
Meta has renamed its catalog ads. Its page for them says your product catalog now works across all sales campaigns, not just one ad format, and that this was formerly known as Advantage+ catalog ads. The same page calls the format Products from your catalog and doesn't say when the name changed.
You connect your catalog, and Meta builds the ads from it. The page lists product showcase, catalog product video and products from your catalog as the ways Meta personalizes those ads "with no extra creative production needed." Meta's own figure for the format is a 17% lower cost per incremental conversion than single-media ads.
Your pictures still matter. Since May 2024, Meta has let advertisers use branded videos or customer demonstration videos in catalog ads instead of only static images, and put a "hero" image or video in the center of a catalog ad. Its Show products option adds shoppable product cards to a static image or video you upload, and Meta's page puts the result at a 9.3% lower cost per acquisition. Our post on Marketing API v27 covers the change to product showcase in ads made through Meta's API.
On Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network, a carousel holds up to ten images or videos in one ad, each with its own link. For one garment, that's room for a front, a back, a detail and a styled shot. For a seasonal drop, it's one card for each piece.
A collection ad shows a main video or image with three smaller images in a grid under it. When someone taps it, a fast-loading Instant Experience opens without taking them off Facebook or Instagram. Meta suggests its Instant Storefront template when you have a catalog of four or more products and one main video or image to lead with. You build all three formats in Meta's Ads Manager. Our post on Facebook ad examples shows campaigns in these formats that Meta has documented.
TikTok's Catalog Ads, Smart+ and shop formats
TikTok's page for clothing brands lists three ad products for fashion campaigns.
- Catalog Ads show product recommendations on the For You page and other placements, "to boost sales on your fashion and clothing website."
- Smart+ automates targeting, bidding and creative.
- In-Feed Ads come with TopView and Top Feed as their branding options.
The same page says 35% of TikTok users bought fashion they first saw or learned about on TikTok. It credits that figure to 2023 TikTok Marketing Science research conducted by Material, so it's TikTok's own number.
TikTok's help center says Catalog Ads use the images, videos and product information in your catalog to build personalized ads. The Image Catalog Carousel automatically pulls 2 to 10 cards from your catalog. For eligible Traffic campaigns, TikTok can also improve image resolution, create backgrounds and add selling points.
TikTok's Q3 2026 Product Preview, dated July 28, 2026, lists more ways to fill a catalog ad.
- Creative Upgrades, formerly Creator+, mixes your top past creatives with pre-approved trending TikTok videos and AI-generated assets in Smart+ Catalog Ads.
- Catalog Image & Video Auto-Crawl finds product images and videos on your public landing pages.
- In its section for sellers, the Preview says GMV Max can use shoppable carousel ads and product videos it generates with TikTok Symphony.
You set these up in TikTok Ads Manager. Our post on UGC for fashion brands covers Spark Ads and creator videos for clothing.
Pinterest's shopping ads, collections and carousels
Pinterest's help center lists four types of shopping ads you can make once you've uploaded your product catalog.
- A standard shopping ad is a single static image promoting a product.
- A video shopping ad is a video clip promoting a product.
- A personalized collections ad pairs one large lifestyle image or video with three supporting product images.
- A carousel shopping ad mixes images and videos to show different features of one product, or several products at once.
Collections ads have a few rules of their own.
- Tapping one opens a full-screen view with the hero creative and up to 24 secondary creatives.
- You can only create collections ads on desktop, and Pinterest shows them to people in its mobile app.
- You promote them through Pinterest's Ads Manager, its bulk editor or an API partner.
Pinterest's business blog says brands that added shopping ads to their mix saw 15% higher ROAS and 2.6x higher conversion rates. Those are Pinterest's own figures, from a post it last updated in July 2025.
Check that Pinterest runs ads in your country before you count on it. When we read Pinterest's ads help center from Spain, a banner on the page said "It looks like you're viewing this from a region where Ads aren't available yet." Our post on Pinterest visual search ads covers the search side of Pinterest ads.
Google's Shopping ads and your Merchant Center feed
Unlike text-only ads, Google's Shopping ads show a product photo, title, price and store name. Google uses the product data in your Merchant Center account, not keywords, to decide how and where to show them. As we read it, that makes the photo in your feed the ad's main picture. Our look at Shopping ad CTR and AI Overviews covers what one analysis found about those ads' impressions and click-through rate.
What all these formats ask you to make
Put side by side, these formats need the same few things from a clothing brand.
| Platform | Format | What it shows | What to make for it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta | Products from your catalog (formerly catalog ads) | ads built from your catalog in any sales campaign | a clean photo of every product |
| Meta | Carousel | up to ten images or videos, each with its own link | several shots of each piece, or one card per piece |
| Meta | Collection | a main video or image over three smaller images | one lead image or clip and three product shots |
| TikTok | Image Catalog Carousel | 2 to 10 cards pulled from your catalog | a picture for every product |
| Personalized collections ad | one large lifestyle image or video and three product images | one lifestyle shot and three product shots | |
| Shopping ad | a product photo, title, price and store name | the photo in your feed |
For this post, we made one set like that for a plain sage overshirt we described in words.
Made in Novoads with Nano Banana Pro · four stills at 2K and 4:5, the first from the prompt alone and the other three with it as a reference, 2 credits each, 8 credits in all · 2026-11-07
The woman, her hair and earrings, and the outfit stayed the same in all four. Two details drifted from our prompts. The front still has five buttons down the placket, where we'd asked for four. The street shot has a cut-off shop sign with white letters at its right edge, though we'd asked for no signs or text. So check every still against the real garment before it goes into your catalog. Our post on the Skechers ads critics called AI-made covers the tells they named and how to fix each one.
Where TikTok's AI try-on fits
What the Q3 Product Preview says
TikTok's Product Preview, titled "What's new for brands in Q3 2026," and dated July 28, 2026, has a section called Symphony Avatar. It says the upgraded Avatar experience in Symphony Creative Studio lets advertisers make UGC-style content that narrates, demonstrates and showcases products. Then it adds that "the update brings voiceover, product demos, and virtual try-on into one workflow."
TikTok reused the same web address for its earlier Previews this year, so the live link may show a different edition by the time you read this. An Internet Archive copy from September 15, 2026, has the same paragraph word for word. The Q3 edition also isn't TikTok's latest. A Q4 2026 Preview went up on October 30 at a different address. It doesn't mention Symphony Avatar or try-on, so it neither repeats the line nor takes it back.
What's new in that line, and what isn't
Only the single workflow is new. TikTok's newsroom already listed an avatar clothing video on June 16, 2025, in its words, "Create a video with an avatar trying on and modeling an item of clothing." TikTok's blog post that day said the avatar could hold the item, try it on or show it on a mobile device, in a five-second video.
So all the July line adds is bringing voiceover, product demos and virtual try-on into one workflow. TikTok gives no country, rollout date or results for it. The Preview's availability notes cover other products and never mention Symphony Avatar, and the section itself has no figures.
What TikTok's help pages say an avatar can do
TikTok's help page on avatar videos, last updated in October 2026, never uses the words try-on or virtual. It says a Product avatar takes an image you upload of a product or app screen and turns it into video clips of an avatar "holding, showcasing, or modeling the product." Modeling is as close as that page gets to try-on.
The same page says "Clothing accessories, such as shoes, hats, sunglasses bracelets, etc. are not supported." So if you sell shoes, hats, sunglasses or bracelets, TikTok's own help page says the Product avatar doesn't support them.
TikTok's help pages add three more details.
- Every exported avatar video gets an AI-generated label.
- Adding a voiceover to the clips is optional.
- You can use Symphony Creative Studio for paid content as well as organic.
On cost, TikTok comes out ahead for avatar clips. Its credits page says Symphony Creative Studio "is free to use for all advertisers," and that image generation and avatar videos don't need credits. Video generation does use credits. They come as a weekly allowance, and any you don't use expire at the weekly refresh. The page doesn't give a cash price for them.
TikTok Shop describes a separate try-on tool for its US sellers. Its seller center has terms for an AI Fashion Video Maker. The terms say the tool will generate short try-on videos from the images you upload of your fashion products and of models wearing them. They also bar uploading images that contain children to make those videos.
Seedance 2.5 in Symphony, and the Seedance 2.5 we sell
On August 3, 2026, TikTok said it had integrated Dreamina Seedance 2.5, "the newest generation of ByteDance's AI video model," into Symphony. TikTok's post lists what comes with it.
- Symphony generates up to 30 seconds of video, up from 15.
- It takes up to 50 references across images, video and audio.
- It blocks uploads of real faces.
In TikTok's words, that version is rolling out "to select paid advertiser in select markets," and the post names no market. So don't plan on 30-second clips or 50 references in your own Symphony account.
We sell a model called Seedance 2.5 in Novoads. TikTok's is Dreamina Seedance 2.5. Nothing on TikTok's pages or ours says the two are the same build or share limits, so TikTok's clip length and reference count tell you nothing about ours.
The other try-ons, and who wears the clothes
Try-on means two different things in fashion advertising. In TikTok's avatar videos and in Meta's test, an AI model wears the clothes inside the ad. In Google's Try-on, shoppers see the clothes on a photo of themselves while they shop. Keep the two apart when you read a platform's announcement.
Google's Try-on works on the shopper's own photo
Google's Merchant Center help page says its Try-on tool combines a photo the shopper uploads with your product images and generates a new image of how the garment might look on their body. It isn't available for Shopping ads, and Google says products under "Sponsored" won't show the "Try it on" button. Google's Shopping help says the same.
The same page sets out who gets it and what it covers.
- Any merchant with a shopping feed that's eligible to show free listings is opted in automatically.
- Try-on covers shoes, tops, bottoms and dresses, and it doesn't support lingerie, bathing suits or accessories.
- Google says the image doesn't indicate fit, suggest a size or show size availability.
- The page lists the countries where Try-on runs, starting with the United States. Spain, where we read it from, isn't on the list.
Google has a second feature with a similar name. Its apparel virtual try-on lets shoppers pick from a set of models in sizes from XXS to XXXL, and its badge can appear in Shopping ads.
Meta's clothing try-on was a test in Brazil
The only Meta clothing try-on we found is in a June 2025 post on its Brazil newsroom, written in Portuguese. In it, Meta said it was widening tests of a virtual fitting room that uses generative AI to show clothes on virtual models of different shapes and sizes. Meta's Brazil newsroom posts from Cannes in June 2026 don't mention the test, so we wouldn't plan a campaign around it.
If you're after the shopper's side (on-model photos for your store and try-on for your customers), our post on AI fashion photography for ecommerce covers it.
Making the pictures and clips for these formats
Prices as of November 7, 2026.
Two clips from the front still
We made two vertical clips in Novoads from the front still. The first is an 8-second Omni Flash clip at 720p. She does a slow half turn to show the back of the overshirt, turns back to the camera and rolls a cuff, all in one continuous shot. It cost 24 credits and came back in a minute and a half.
Made in Novoads with Omni Flash · one 8-second 9:16 clip at 720p from the front still, 24 credits · 2026-11-07
Our catalog lists Omni Flash as Omni 1.1 Flash. It makes clips of 4 to 10 seconds. A 15-second ad means joining two of them. Google's newer Omni 1.2 Flash is a different model, and we don't sell it. Our Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash post covers it.
The second is a 5-second Seedance 2.0 Mini clip at 720p with the sound off. She walks toward the camera beside the cream wall, stops and smiles. It cost 5 credits. It took 2 minutes 43 seconds to come back, and in both clips the outfit stayed the same as in the still.

What we tested, and what we didn't
- We described a plain garment in words and kept it the same across shots by sending the first still as a reference.
- We didn't test a brand's own product photo, so this run can't tell you how closely Novoads reproduces a real garment from a photo.
- We don't call what we made a try-on.
Our image models do take reference pictures, so you can use a photo of your product as one, but you'd want to check the result against the real piece.
What each format costs, based on these runs
We priced each format from the runs above, at $0.075 a credit on Starter and $0.049 on Plus. The dollar figures are our own arithmetic.
| What a format needs | From our runs | Credits | On Starter | On Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Four stills of one piece, for a carousel or a catalog | 4 Nano Banana Pro stills | 8 | 60 cents | about 39 cents |
| One clip on top and three stills under it, for a collection | the Omni Flash clip and 3 stills | 30 | $2.25 | $1.47 |
| The same layout with the cheaper clip | the Seedance 2.0 Mini clip and 3 stills | 11 | about 83 cents | about 54 cents |
| One short vertical clip for TikTok or Reels | the 8-second Omni Flash clip | 24 | $1.80 | about $1.18 |
| The cheapest clip we made | the 5-second Seedance 2.0 Mini clip | 5 | about 38 cents | about 25 cents |
| Everything in this post | 4 stills and 2 clips | 37 | about $2.78 | about $1.81 |
A Starter month's 200 credits cover five sets like ours. Spent on nothing but Mini clips, the same credits would buy 40 of them.
Nano Banana Pro, which we used for the stills, costs 2 credits a picture at 2K. Our other image models are GPT Image 2, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Flare, GPT Image 2.6 Sunburst and Flare, and Seedream 5 Lite and Pro.
Every plan is paid from the first month.
- Starter is $15 a month for 200 credits, billed monthly.
- Plus is $49 a month for 1,000 credits.
- Ultra starts at $129 a month for 3,000 credits.
Our pricing page shows them side by side.
Our pricing page with monthly billing selected, 2026-11-07
You make the pictures and clips in Novoads, then upload them and run the ads yourself in Meta's Ads Manager, TikTok Ads Manager or Pinterest's Ads Manager. Our pricing FAQ says all videos generated with Novoads are fully licensed for commercial use.
Make the stills and clips for your next drop
Our stills and clips of a single outfit came to 37 credits. Starter is $15 a month for 200 credits.
Compare the plansWhere we'd start with one garment
If we were launching a single piece, we'd make the four stills first, because every format above can use them. Then we'd add a short clip for the top of a collection and for TikTok. The Mini clip is the cheap way to see whether motion helps that piece at all. Before anything runs, we'd hold each still up against the real garment, since ours came back with an extra button.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is fashion advertising?
It means paying to put clothes, shoes or accessories in front of people who might buy them. On Meta, TikTok, Pinterest and Google, the ad formats built for selling products start from a product catalog: Meta's Products from your catalog (formerly Advantage+ catalog ads), TikTok's Catalog Ads, Pinterest's shopping ads and Google's Shopping ads, plus carousel and collection ads that show several pieces in one ad. That's what each platform's own pages said when we read them on November 7, 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Meta, TikTok, Pinterest and Google each sell ad formats built from a product catalog. Meta now calls its catalog ads Products from your catalog.
- TikTok's Q3 2026 Product Preview says the Symphony Avatar update brings voiceover, product demos and virtual try-on into one workflow. Having them in one workflow is the only new part, and TikTok gives no country, rollout date or results for it.
- TikTok's help center says a Product avatar holds, showcases or models a product from an image you upload, and that shoes, hats, sunglasses and bracelets aren't supported.
- Google's Try-on puts clothes on the shopper's own photo and isn't available for Shopping ads. The only clothing try-on we found from Meta is a 2025 test in Brazil.
- Four Nano Banana Pro stills of an outfit cost us 8 credits in Novoads. An 8-second Omni Flash clip made from the front still cost 24 credits. A 5-second Seedance 2.0 Mini clip from the same still cost 5.
